Interactive

I’ve used different web-based software to create interactive graphics readers of the Appeal-Democrat can use to get more out of our stories. I’m experienced in using both Caspio and Google Gadgets for building spreadsheet-based graphics, but am required to use Caspio with my work CMS.

Weather line graph- For a story talking about an unusually cool summer of 2010 in Yuba-Sutter, I compiled two months of Accuweather daily highs and lows for Yuba City along with the average high and low temperatures for each day.

Timelines- I use TimeGlider to build interactive timelines to accompany stories that have a lot of background. For a story on the retirement of a local college chancellor, I went back through the newspaper archives to find significant events during her tenure.

Shootings Map- This an example of using Google Maps to continuously build an interactive graphic. This map shows incidents involving gunfire in our coverage area since September of 2007. Blue pushpins are used for general incidents, green indicates a drive-by shooting and red indicates a fatality. Police officer icons denote officer-involved shootings. I update this map on a regular basis.
